Our Organisation

SIPD (Southern Institute of Peace-building and Development) is a research and training organisation on issues at the intersection of peace and development in Africa, primarily targeting peace and development actors and activists. It works with like-minded civil society organisations, social movements, media houses, academic and research institutions, and governmental bodies. The organisation is registered as a trust with the Government of Zimbabwe and is based in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Vision

The vision of the Institute is to be the go-to institution on issues at the intersection of peace and development in Africa.

Mission

Its mission is to imbue peace and development actors and activists in Africa with high level critical consciousness on issues at the intersection of peace and development on the continent. The Institute does this by carrying out interdisciplinary research, policy dialogues, training and information dissemination, in collaboration with like-minded individuals, organisations and institutions in Africa and across the globe.

Objectives

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research on issues at the intersection of peace and development throughout Africa
  • Provide training, capacity building and civic education on issues at the intersection of peace and development for peace and development actors and activists in Africa
  • Disseminate research findings and other information widely through print and electronic publications as well as other media
  • Provide platforms for the exchange of ideas amongst academics, policy makers, civil society and citizens such as conferences, panel discussions, workshops, and mass media programmes
  • Advocate for in-country and continental public policies and practices appropriate for sustainable peace and development on the continent
  • Establish linkages with like-minded national, regional and international institutions for the exchange of ideas, and for collaboration in research, training, advocacy and information dissemination.

    • Leadership structure

  • Board of trustees. The organisation operates under the leadership of a board of trustees which is its legal custodian and professional management advisor of first resort
  • Academic Board. The organisation has a specialist board that guides its research and training functions. This includes deciding annual thematic focus, assisting with fundraising, providing research and training guidelines, approving research and course proposals, and overseeing implementation processes. The Board is made up of distinguished academics and researchers on peace and development issues from throughout Africa.
  • Management and staff. The day to day management of the organisation is the responsibility of the Executive Director, supported by a team of managers and administrators covering its three function areas: programmes, business development and administration.
